Valerie Compton has been a successful competitive athlete for over 35 years. Using her experience in track & field and competitive tennis as well as her knowledge of weight loss and clean eating, she built a highly successful personal training business in Connecticut and NYC. After moving to Albuquerque in the 1990’s Valerie formed several women’s relay teams that competed in and placed in every major running and multi-sport event they entered. Her teams have won or placed in the Duke City Marathon, Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, Las Cruces Marathon, and local duathlons. Valerie has been educating and motivating others to reach their fitness goals for almost 20 years. Her strong focus, energy, and commitment to excellence is passed on to all she comes in contact with. She holds certifications from Polestar, Power Pilates, Pilates for Golf, AFAA, Heart Zones, and Spinning. She has studied nutrition for weight loss as well as for athletic performance and practices what she preaches. She regularly travels to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Scottsdale to study the latest trends in the fitness industry, to keep her clients challenged, motivated and always reaching for more. In 2006 Valerie developed the hugely successful BARREFUSION a one hour workout designed to burn fat while tightening and elongating the muscle to build a lean sculpted look.
In 2009 Valerie was voted “Best of the City – Personal Trainer” by the readers of Abq The Magazine!
August 2011 Valerie won 1st Place Masters Division in the La Luz Trail Run and 6th female finnisher overall with a time of 1:59. Nine miles with an elevation gain of over 3,700 feet. The La Luz Trail Run has been voted one of the 12 hardest races in North America!
Cathy Carrillo her life in the fitness industry after she faced her own lifelong struggles with improving her health and fitness levels. Her evolution to a healthier lifestyle was a journey that helped her to make the changes which led her to lose 70 pounds. She has a genuine enthusiasm towards health and fitness, and shares this by demonstrating that making permanent changes is possible for everyone. Cathy currently holds certifications in Spinning, Personal Training, Power Plate Training, Schwinn Indoor Cycling, and TRX Suspension Training, Cathy joined BodyLanguage in September, 2009, as an instructor for BARREFUSION and SPINNING. Cathy is also a coach in the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method since the program was introduced to BODYLANGUAGE in November, 2009. Cathy successfully coaches and motivates clients through the Ideal Protein program to reach their weight loss goals. Cathy believes that fitness is about much more than looking good: it’s about feeling great, being strong, and living a happy, healthy life.
Kelly Carpenter has been involved in the fitness industry for over 18 years. Pilates Caliente is her brand of Pilates that utilizes the benefits of a heated room and combines it with the intense core work that awakens your body and lifts your spirit. The contagious exercise combined with the fun fillet atmosphere will keep you coming back for more. Whether you do private sessions, group sessions, or Pilates Caliente mat classes you are in for a one of a kind experience that will change your body forever. Kelly’s goal is to shape up Albuquerque one pelvic floor at a time.
Sydney Forestal is a spontaneous, fun loving, adventurous person who loves teaching Fitness! Sydney started competitive sports at a young age. She was a NM State Champion in gymnastics and a National qualifier. She was competitive in school sports such as volleyball, basketball, track and golf. After graduating High School she attended The University of New Mexico where she found the rigorous sport of Rugby. Family and friends told her she was crazy yet she continued to play and led a successful career in Rugby, D1 western champions 2007, D1 1st team All-American 2006-2007, and USA U-23 team 2005-2007. Sydney has a huge interest in fitness and nutrition and started personal training in 2006 where she discovered her love for helping people transform their lives. She now teaches Hot Yoga and loves cross -training at BODYLANGUAGE because of the intensity that it brings to the mind and body. Her Bachelors in University Studies with a concentration in Health and Lifestyle Management ties in with the method practiced at BODYLANGUAGE. Sydney likes to create a fun environment in her class with the intention towards preventive health and balance in life. Sydney enjoys volunteering with her Therapy dog Flo, the outdoors, traveling, gardening, nutrition, Pilates, Rugby, triathlons and most importantly she loves life!
Samantha Fernandez Sam is an ACE certified Personal Trainer and has been personal training for seven years along with teaching group fitness classes. She has
taught everything from circuit, bootcamp and spinnig. She has taken her love for the outdoors by pursing trail running actively and competing in everything from trail runs to snowshoe races. She enjoys actively climbing 14,000 peaks in Colorado as often as she can. Sam received her bachelors degree in psychology from UNM in 2004. She ran the UNM Recreational Services Fitness Program from 2007-2010. She is currently continuing her education through UNM’s Masters of Counseling. Sam is also a new Lululemon Run Ambassador. Not only does she take her job very seriously but she still knows how to make it fun! She has also been an active and loyal BODYLANGUAGE participant for over a year now.
Tara Massarsky fell in love with indoor cycling 10 years ago. Her motivating and high energy classes always bring out the most in her students, whether you are seeking weight loss, improved fitness, or enhanced training for endurance athletics. Tara’s classes are exciting and fast paced with lots of musical variety to help keep you energized. She is passionate about helping people of all levels of experience and enjoys working with beginners as well as seasoned and competitive athletes – all are welcome! She came to BODYLANGUAGE as a student and was hooked immediately on BARREFUSION because of its efficiency and effectiveness; it’s a perfect combination with cycling. When she’s not cycling you can find her in the studio painting for she’s also a professional artist. You can also find her in the garden or kitchen practicing her best” foodie” interpretations for her family.
Lea Otero is a trained ballet dancer, pianist and addicted BarreBabe. She has spent most of her life dedicated to improving her own health and fitness, and has always wanted to help others pave their own way to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Lea first stumbled upon BODYLANGUAGE while in search of a yoga studio, and while the classes offered were not exactly what she was looking for, she stuck with them anyway, because they were much harder, more intense and WAY more fun than any other group fitness classes she had ever taken. When she’s not in the studio teaching a class, taking a class or working the front desk, Lea enjoys gardening, cooking, shopping for anything sparkly, and playing with her dog, Princess Wuvie. She is currently training for the 2013 Duke City Marathon.
Tara Arellano enjoys all types of fitness from BARRE, TRX, Hot Yoga & Running. She is an avid cyclist and enjoys wine tasting and entertaining. She hopes to motivate women everywhere to move toward their goals with purpose and passion to achieve greatness in whatever they choose. She is a happy wife and loving mother to her beautiful little girl Ava, 5. Tara was a competitive gymnast, cheerleader and dancer for most of her childhood. She became an IFPA Figure Pro and landed her first magazine cover, Fitness & Physique. Her education background is in Nutrition/Dietetics with an emphasis on Exercise Science. Tara graduated Suma-Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico. She is a Certified Personal Trainer, TRX & Barre Certified instructor, Nutritionist & Fitness Coach. On a more personal note, Tara is proud to be a young, successful, Hispanic-American mother, wife. She comes from a strong Christian family and enjoys supporting the Lord’s ministry through donating her time, finances and bringing others to Jesus Christ. “ I am grateful to be a part of BODYLANGUAGE so I can inspire the minds of the clients with the Amazing Barre technique”.
Emma Van Riper says ” I fell in love with BODYLANGUAGE as a client. Between awesome classes and inspiring summer hikes I knew I had found a diamond in the ruff. Monica Coshenet loves spending time playing in a variety of sports such as soccer, volleyball and even adult kickball. She has her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and feels blessed to have the opportunity to work with a variety of people, improving their lives in personal and individual way. And because she focuses on living a fun and healthy life, BODYLANGUAGE has been the perfect fit for her! Monica had been a client at the studio for over two years before becoming a spin and barre instructor. She loves the high energy, extreme shake and positive outcome each class offers. Monica’s goal in each of her classes is to provide a great workout while putting a smile on the face of each of our amazing clients. Rachael Allen learned how to ride a bike at age 18 and has had an addictive passion for it ever since. Rachael has competed in school sports since middle school such as volleyball, track and basketball. She loves to run, hike, bike and rock climb. Rachael is a certified basic EMT/ with a CPR certification. As health and exercise has always been importent in her life, she is now working on a degree in Nutrition with a minor in Spanish. In May, 2011, Rachael participated in her first 100 mile ride, The Santa Fe Century, and six days later went to Durango, Colorado where she participated in The Iron Horse- Quarterhorse. Rachael’s classes are full of heavy hills and fast paced energy. She has a strong passion for motivating her students to their maximum fitness capacity. Rachael is a MADD DOG certified spinning instructor and proud to be affiliated with the BODYLANGUAGE family!
Rita James has been a fitness enthusiast for over 20 years. “The first time I attended a barre class, I was in love and knew I wanted to teach at BODYLANGUAGE. I’ve seen amazing results and I receive many compliments on my arms and posture.” Rita is a personal trainer and holds a Master’s degree in Education from University of New Mexico. Currently, Rita is working towards becoming a licensed Certified Public Accountant. When she is not attending or teaching barre classes, spinning, or jogging, or studying, Rita is chauffeuring her 10-year-old daughter, Sage, to dance classes and piano lessons, spending quality time with her husband, Brian, or hanging out with friends in Nob Hill.
Barry Crow is a native New Mexican active in many sports including grappling, kickboxing, and Track & Field. Over the past few years he has developed a passion for trail running leading him to compete in the Warrior Dach and Spartan obstacle races. It wasn’t until he entered a BODYLANGUAGE Challenge that he wanted to help others achieve and expand their fitness goals. Barry is certified in TRX and hopes to bring the passion of fitness to others. He is a graduate from UNM with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Sonya Ewan has nearly a decade of experience as a cyclist and several additional years as a mountain biker and former co-ed ice hockey player. She was profiled in “Women Who Move” for Her Sports + Fitness magazine in 2007. A lifetime ambassador of health and fitness, she completed CNM’s Fitness Technician program in April 2011. She is Spinning and Group Fitness-certified and has been an instructor for BODYLANGUAGE since April 2009. Sonya holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Johanna Cubra started training as a classical ballet dancer at the age of 5. Her first career was as a professional dancer, working in Montreal, New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She moved to New Mexico in 1992 where she has taught dance to all ages and abilities for over 15 years. She obtained a masters degree in occupational therapy in 2004, and specializes in motor learning with young children & their families. She came to Body Language as a student in 2010, fell in love with BARREFUSION and the BODYLANGUAGE community. She is now an instructor for various Barre classes, and is thrilled to be a member of the BODYLANGUAGE family.
